One Square Foot of Ground, Issue #1

"One Square Foot of Ground" is a series of documentations and observations, published in book format. A 12 inch by 12 inch section of ground is selected in a particular area. The name of the location, date, and the coordinates are recorded and it is photographed and marked off with string.

Notes are then taken on all observations seen within the one square foot section of ground; marks, tracks, scat, insect life, plant life, soil, rocks, leaves, litter, water, etc. These are photographed and journaled. There is no time limit to the observation, but the minimum is one hour.

From these observations, drawings and writings are created and added to the documentation of the site. Together these form a feeling of the place, its sense. They also serve to demonstrate the abundance of life and activity found in every foot of our natural environment.
